Women's lives are layered — and so is the support you deserve.
Our individual therapy sessions provide a safe, confidential space for women experiencing stress, grief, trauma, and transitions that are often minimized or misunderstood. We work with women navigating family dynamics, workplace pressure, cultural expectations, perimenopause, menopause, fertility concerns, hormonal health, weight management, divorce, separation, intimacy, domestic abuse, sexual violence, and the systemic injustices that quietly erode women's wellbeing every day.
This is not a space where you will be rushed, dismissed, or asked to be smaller than you are. This is a space where all of it — every layer — is welcome.
Sumu approaches therapy as a partnership. She works alongside each woman — not above her — honouring her lived experience, her intuition, and her capacity to heal. Every therapeutic plan is tailored, collaborative, and built around what you need, not a predetermined formula.
Her practice is science led and spiritually grounded. Drawing from evidence-based modalities including EMDR, CBT, DBT, and Internal Family Systems, Sumu weaves in somatic approaches and ancestral wisdom that honour the whole woman — her nervous system, her culture, her body, and her spirit. Because healing that ignores any part of you is only partial healing.
Beginning therapy is a deeply personal decision — and finding the right fit matters. That's why Sumu offers a free 20-minute discovery call before any commitment is made. It's a chance to connect, ask questions, and sense whether this is the space for you.
Individual therapy sessions are $170 per hour. Many insurance plans cover psychotherapy provided by a Registered Social Worker — we encourage you to contact your provider directly to confirm your coverage and reimbursement amounts. Receipts are provided for all sessions to support your claim.
If insurance coverage is a barrier, please don't let it stop you from reaching out. We are committed to making healing accessible and are happy to have a quiet conversation about what works for you. Connect with us through the contact page or reach us directly at info@shakticounselling.com.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy that helps your brain process painful memories — so they no longer hold power over you.
It doesn't require you to talk through every detail. It doesn't require you to justify your pain. It just helps you heal.
Your brain already knows how to heal — EMDR just activates it
During EMDR, your therapist guides you through bilateral stimulation — gentle, rhythmic side-to-side movement through eye movements, tapping, or sound.
This mimics what your brain naturally does during REM sleep — the stage of sleep where your mind processes and files away the events of the day.
When trauma is too overwhelming, the brain can't complete that process. Memories get "stuck" — raw, unprocessed, and emotionally charged.
Bilateral stimulation helps unstick them. It allows your brain to do what it was always designed to do: heal itself.
EMDR is one of the most researched trauma therapies in the world. Here's what the evidence shows:
✦ The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends EMDR as a first-line treatment for PTSD
✦ Up to 90% of single-trauma survivors no longer meet the criteria for PTSD after just 3 sessions of EMDR
✦ Recognized by the American Psychiatric Association, the Canadian Psychological Association, and over 30 countries worldwide
✦ Effective for trauma, anxiety, depression, phobias, grief, and racial trauma
Healing rooted in both science and humanity.

Built for the therapists the system wasn't built for.
You've done the training. You've earned your credentials. But nobody prepared you for the reality of building a private practice — the business decisions, the boundaries, the isolation of working independently, and the particular weight of doing this work as a racialized therapist navigating a profession that wasn't designed with you in mind.
That's exactly where Sumu comes in.
With nearly 20 years of combined experience in social work, entrepreneurship, media, a Master's in Social Work from the University of Toronto, and a practice rooted in anti-oppressive, decolonial, and intersectional feminist values, Sumu offers business coaching and clinical supervision for new and emerging therapists who want to build practices that are sustainable, values-aligned, and authentically their own.
This isn't generic business advice. And it isn't supervision that asks you to leave your identity at the door.
Whether you're just starting out or ready to stop surviving and start building something that truly reflects who you are — this space is for you.

All matters discussed during therapy sessions are kept confidential, except when disclosure is mandated by law. Should such a situation arise, we will inform you and obtain your consent. Social workers are obligated to report if a minor requires protection or under the following conditions:
Therapy may be concluded by either the therapist or the client at any time. We recommend discussing any concerns with your therapist prior to ending the sessions. You are welcome to return at any point, as many clients choose to do so when new challenges emerge in their lives.
If it is determined that our services are not the most suitable for your needs, Sumu will gladly provide referrals to other therapists. However, the final decision regarding the selection of a therapist will rest with you.
In the event of a medical emergency, please contact 911. For non-life-threatening concerns, Sumu will endeavour to schedule the earliest possible appointment for you.
We strongly advise our clients against contacting Sumu via social media. The client-therapist relationship should be conducted exclusively through our secure and confidential platforms. Maintaining professional boundaries is essential for ethical reasons.
Should your team or organization wish to engage Sumu for workshop facilitation or as a guest speaker, please contact us via email at info@shakticounselling.com.
